I'm Maya, I grew up moving back and forth between Texas & California, and now live in Oakland, California. I make mostly linocut prints and also do wheatpasting, film photography, spray painting, and risograph printing. I usually make art inspired by my experiences in life, my Mexican-American & queer cultural communities, and the Chihuahuan desert region where my family is from.
I was introduced to lino printmaking in 2019 through a free workshop for queer youth called Queer Ancestors Project. I'm so thankful because that experience pushed me to make art for pretty much the first time :') Learning art through community spaces inspired me to find more ways to make printmaking and other art forms accessible to artists of all ages. Along with 5 of my friends, I took part in creating Colectiva Libre, a collective that offers free art workshops to the community and encourages people to create as a form of political and self-expression. I'm also a part of Ancestral Dreams Collective, a collective of trans and queer artists who collaborate on art exhibitions and other creative endeavors !!
